VirtualBox 4.0

Oracle just released VirtualBox 4.0 couple of days ago.

I always prefer Sun VirtualBox. Not only VirtualBox is free, as it is an Open Source Software and also, VirtualBox run better and faster on my Fedora 14 notebook, as compare to VMWare Workstation. My personal experience is that VirtualBox is lightweight and need lesser hardware demands as well as good for personal virtualization needs.

VirtualBox 4.0 has introduced lots of new features, you can read from the #Changelog at the official site.

Install VirtualBox 4 is very easy.

#wget http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.0.0/VirtualBox-4.0-4.0.0_69151_fedora14-1.i686.rpm

#yum localinstall VirtualBox-4.0-4.0.0_69151_fedora14-1.i686.rpm

I use yum localinstall instead of rpm -ivh, to resolves all the dependent packages automatically. Btw, you can simply execute yum install VirtualBox if you import virtualbox.repo file into the YUM’s /etc/yum.repos.d/ directory.

Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA)

Just received a notification from Red Hat that I’ve been awarded new RHCSA certificate for the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 exam which I took last year.

RHCSA will replace Red Hat Certified Technician (RHCT) with the launch of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 system. On the light side, Certified System Administrator sound better than Certified Technician :) , right?

I think, Red Hat certification is moving to the right direction as the IT infrastructure landscape has changed so much and IT professional need skills across multiple platforms to maintain the future complexity of IT systems and data center.

Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA)

I obtained other certifications before, such as Microsoft, etc, and my opinion is that Red Hat exam is the most challenging one, because Red Hat exam is fully performance based / practical certifications. That’s mean, if you don’t know the solution, you simply can’t proceed. There is no multiple choice for you to tikam.

* tikam = choose randomly

New rules on not-so-free trial

When I saw this news IDA tightens free trial rules this morning, felt that consumers should at least get some protection over unfair business practices.

A few months ago, I sign-up 3 months trial on Starhub TV. I had never subscribed to paid TV before, and just wanna to see how is the offering. So, I have to keep reminding myself to terminate the service and return the box if wife and me doesn’t like these shows.

We canceled the service in 3 months just before the bill kick-in. We only like a few shows, such as Lie To Me & Burn Notice TV series. No worth of paying $25+ for TV subscription. The termination is quite ease, just walk to any Starhub service center and return the box set, done in 5 minutes.

Free trials deals often lure consumers into signing long term contract, if they are not carefully reading those fine-print.

I would like to share some tips to avoid fall into such trap:

1) Read the Fine Print

Look for procedure to terminate the service and when you will be charged.

2) Don’t fill-up GIRO or credit card payment form

The service provider might charge the fees to your credit card or deduct from your bank account, and can be hard to reverse the charges that were incurred after you canceled the subscription.

3) Remember to cancel

Use your phone reminder feature or Google calender as a reminder to cancel before the trial period ends.

Xbox 360 with Kinect sensor is very impressive

After playing with XBox 360 with Kinect sensor in the past few days, I felt that money worth spent on this gaming device. I’m no longer a couch potato. Stand-up and move the body to play games. haa haa

Kinect sensor is an innovative way for you to play video games. Your body is the controller. Kinect is suitable for sport, fitness, dancing and action packs games.

I never good at playing games using controller. Kinect is able to trace the body movement and no need to use the controller. Just use your hand & leg to “touch/hit” on the air.

Playing for past few days, I really enjoy Kinect Adventures and Kinect Sports, giving me good physical workouts.

Heard that Dance Central and Your Shape, thinking of buying next month :)

Just watched the video of Xbox 360 with Kinect Sensor, very impressive & amazing.

After watching the video, what do you think of the XBox 360?
