Blocking Yahoo/MSN/Skype Messenger At Office?

Today afternoon, someone in the office ask me: it is possible to block MSN traffic in the office network?

Answer is Yes and No.

It is possible to block the official Internet Messaging (IM) IP addresses or port used by Yahoo/MSN/Skype.

However, there are lots of alternative ways to access blocked Yahoo/MSN Messenger.

Many online sites which offer access to Yahoo/MSN/Skype and other IM services online via web interface. Also, many tools and tweak available that allow people to access to IM systems as well.

IM Blocking : easier said than done.

Personally, I think that corporate IT Usage Policies represent the best way to deter employees from using instant messaging. Just trust the employee lah.

my iRobot Roomba in action

After dis research and planning for some months, finally bought the iRobot Roomba 560.

Since the US dollar exchange rate is quite low now and was thinking of buy directly from US website. However, the shipping charges, power voltages converter and warranty issues. Finally, decided to bought from this guy from eBay. He is quite helpful and friendly in the HardwareZone forum to advise on the iRobot thingy.

I was quite surprise the iRobot could “suck-up” as much as dust/hair from the floor. I can also schedule iRobot to do the cleaning when we were off to work during the day.

How to Create a Fedora Bootable USB Drive using liveusb-creator

I wanted to make a bootable USB thumb drive of Fedora 14 LiveCD.

As I’m using Fedora 14 notebook, making a Fedora bootable USB drive is quite handy, specially for system recovery and show case or introduce to friends of Fedora Linux.

There are many software out there to create bootable USB drives from Fedora iso, but I preferred liveusb-creator.

# yum install liveusb-creator

yum install will prompt for some dependencies, just answer with Y.

Once liveusb-creator is installed, you can find the shortcut from Applications, System Tools. Or just execute command #liveusb-creator

Starhub Broadband on Modem Speed

I’m using Starhub 1Mbps mobile broadband plan on the move. I don’t use it very often, only when I works outside office or on the move.

On the last few occasions where I connect to StarHub HSPA network, the download speed are always not satisfaction. The speeds are ridiculously slow. Most of the time, I only managed to get “modem” speed.

I think, IDA asks ISPs to disclose the average surfing speed or expected speeds for broadband plans is a good move.

I do understand that Internet speeds are affected by many factors and interferences, for example computer speed, broadband modem setting, broadband line, web servers and so on. But this shouldn’t be excuses for not disclosing average surfing speed or minimum guaranteed speed.
